Nature of Organizational Behaviour.

Organizational Behaviour is a recent origin and developing as a separate field of study. It has properly progressed in the latter half of the twentieth century. Its present nature may be discussed as under.

1. A separate field of study - > Organizational Behaviour is a separate field of study. Many researches and analysis habve been done in this field. But it is not still accepted as a science. There is no foundation of basic concepts that may guide its development as a science. Therefore, it will be appropriate to call it a field of study rather than discipline.

2. It is an applied science - > The aim of OB it to solve problems of organizations related with human behaviour aspect. Therefore, applied researches are concentrated, in place of fundamental researches. Though many of the researches may be carried in laboratory, but the behaviour of an individual can not be analysed so. Therefore, Organizational Behaviour is both science as well as art.

3. Goal Oriented - > Since OB is applied science it is oriented towards organizational goals. Sometimes there may be conflict of organizational goals with invidual goals. In that case, both the objectives are achieved simultaneously.

4. Interdiscipilanary Approach - > Organizational Behaviour is interdisciplinary in nature. It is based on behavioural and social sciences that contributes to the subject. It applies from this disciplines ideas that will improve the relationships between people and organization.

5. Focus Attention On people - > OB focus the attention on people. It is based on the concept that need and motivation of the people should be given priority. if the people are given proper environment and working condition, they are creative, independent and capable of achieving organizational objectives.

6. Normative Science - > OB is a normative science. It just not only define the cause and effect relationship but also suggests, how the results of various researches can be applied to get organizational results. what acceptable by society is not defines positive science, but it is done by normative science.

From the above discussion it is clear that OB is not a discipline in itself. It draws concepts and principles from other behavioural sciences, which help in directing human behaviour in the organization.

Information technology, globalization, diversity and ethics serve as important dimensions for organizational behaviour but the people are the key factor. The technology can be purchased and copied but the people can not be. Interstingly, whereas the technology changes dramatically, some times monthly or even weekly, the human side of enterprise has not and will not change that fast..

Organizational behavior is the study and application of knowledge about how people act in an organization. As individual and as a groups. Organizational Behaviour (known as OB) in which large number of tolls are used for analysis purpose. It helps manager to look for the behaviour of individuals in an organization. OB applies knowledge gained about individuals, groups and structure. OB is concerned with what people do in an organization ans how that behaviour affects the performance of that organization. Manager of an organization is required to have complete knowledge and information about the following facts :-

1. When do two people (co-workers,or a superior -subordinate) interact ?

2. When do two or more groups need to co-ordinate their efforts ?

3. What complexities are involved in inter-personal relations ?

4. Why some employees are more successful than others ?

5. How can we act as a team ?

6. How to handle the stress of workers - superiors and sub ordinates ?

7. How to obtain suggestions from employees ?

8. Why the culture of one organization differs from other and why it is changing constantly ?

An understanding of organizational behaviour is valuable for improving huamn behaviour in positive direction, on the one hand and the total organization climate, on the other hand. It tries to promote our understanding of the process of human behaviour and the changes that takes place in the goals, roles, values and interests of the organization members during the course of their association with organizations..

What is Behaviour ?

Behaviour may be defined as the way how people act as individual and as groups. Behaviour is defined as goal oriented activities of a person. Generally the behaviour of the person is determined by the goal which he wants to achieve. As a student, we want to get good division in examination. All our activities are concerned with study during examination and it develops a particular type of behaviour at the time..

After completion of education, now our aim is to settle in life. It is another goal, which determines our behaviour. So it can be said that behaviour is a series of activities. As a human being, we are always doing something. Walking, talking, eating, sleeping, etc. In many cases, we are engaged in more than one activities at a time. For example, we are walking as well as talking with our friend. Sometimes, we may decide to change from one activity to something else.

Human Behaviour has always been a matter of research for behavioural scientists. Why people behave in a particular way is a very complex process to search. Infact, the problems are so great that many scholars argue that there can be no precise science of behaviour. Human can not be treated like chemical or physical elements. Two parts of hydrogen to one part oxygen will always result in water, but such situation does not exists in human behaviour.

(i) Why do people engage in a particular activity ?

(ii) Why do they change activities ?

(iii) How can, as a manager, we understand and control the activities of a person ?

The question may be answered on the basis of this fact that the behaviour of every person depends on his needs, goals and motives in life. They arouse and maintain activity and determine the general direction of the behaviour of am individual
