As we know that Global Warming is biggest threat to world .... How it is caused , effects are major things to learn and get remove it from the Earth.......
Global warming is similar to green house effect...... Green house refers to a building made mainly of glass, with heat and humidity regulated for the growth of the plants. Visible light of shorter wavelength passes through the glass and heats up the soil , warming the plants.... The warm soil emits radiation of longer wavelenths , particularly in the infrared region. Glass which allows the shorter wavelength radiation to pass through it, is opaque to longer wavelength of infra-red radiations, it partly reflects and partly absorbs the infra-red radiations . This mechanism keeps the green house warmer than the outer atmosphere....
The atmosphere also surrounding the earth also acts like a green house . CO2 in atmosphere acts like a glass window . CO2 and water vapours in atmosphere transmit short wavelength solar radiations but reflects back the longer wavelength heat radiations emitted from the warmed surface of earth.... CO2 molecules thus trap and re-enforce the solar heat , this effect is commonly known as green house effect.....
The phenomenon of greenhouse effect is essential to maintain the temperature of earth . But human activities which are continuously changing the concentration of atmosphere increasing the amount of heat trapping gases thus earth's temperature . This effect is known as global warming........
Global warming is the uncontrolled and undesirable form of greenhouse effect .
CAUSES : The main cause of global warming is increase in the concentration of greenhouse gases , such as CO2 , CH4, O3, N2O and chlorofluoro carbon's , they possess capacity to absorb infra-red . Dust particles also scatter the outgoingradiation , although not so effectively ..... Major cause in my opinion is the increased percentage of CO2 gas due to increased use of fossil fuels .
EFFECTS OF GLOBAL WARMING
There are adverse effects of global warming ......, some of them are listed below :
(1) Due to global warming, temperature of earth's surface has risen by about .56 degrees centigrade in the 20th century , and it is generally expected to raise by 1-3.4 degrees centigrade by 2100.........
(2) Due to this increase in temperature , ares of northern hemisphere which are covered by the snow have declined in past 25 years . Glaciers have also reduced in many areas......
(3) Due to melting of ice and expanding of waters in seas , sea level has got risen by 10 inches in the last 100 years. Due to this raising level of seas we are loosing our precious areas of land.......
(4) In temperate regions , the winter will be shorter and warmer and the summer will be longer and hotter.......
(5) A warmer atmosphere not only evaporates more water but also increases the chances of developing storms........
(6) There will be enomous increase in rainfall , but the problems of desertifications , drought and soil erosion will further worsen........
(7) Short term effects of global warming will cause death due to thermal extremes , drought and floods and also environment degradation...... Long term includes resurgance of vector borne and infectious diseases, food shortage , population migration.......etc
POLLUTANTS WHICH CAUSE GLOBAL WARMING
The gases which cause green house effect by entrapping the solar heat are mainly CO2 , water vapour , methane , nitrous oxide, chloro fluoro carbon, sulphur di oxide, ozone , fluorine ,iodine are responsible for global warming....... Some of them disscussed as follows:
(1) Carbon Dioxide : Carbon dioxide is the mainly responsible for global warming. CO2 blocks the radiation re-emitted by sun to being escaped into the outer space and radiates it back to the surface . More than half of the green house effect is due to CO2 only........ If concentration of CO2 is doubled it will raise the global temperature by 1.5 to 5.5 degrees centigrade.......
More than 80% of CO2 emissions are caused by industrial activity, combustion of fossil fuels and cement manufacturing.........
(2) Water Vapour : Water vapour enters atmosphere by evaporation of water and leaves by precipitation. The percentage of water vapour is around .01 to 5%.... Although the percentage is so small yet it cause entrap of radiation helping CO2 ........
(3) Methane : It is primarily component of natural gas and liberated from garbage dumps. It is also generated by bacteria in rice fields and in guts of cattle and termites.... It accounts 20% of the greenhouse gases and traps 25 % more than CO2........
(4) Chloro Fluoro Carbons : Each molecule of CFC's can create same global warming as by 10,000 molecules of CO2 ..... This is because it contain halogens molecules which can absorb radiation of 8 to 13 micro wavelength , which cannot be absorbed by CO2 and water vapour ....... They are also responsible for depletion of ozone layer.......
(5) Nitrogen Oxides : It is not only a greenhouse gas but also responsible for destruction of ozone layer....... This gas has tremendous potential of global warming with its heat absorption capacity is 250-290 times that of CO2.... It can stays in atmosphere for over 160 years......
Kindly help the world in reducing these effects of gases...... to overcome the problem of Global warming................
